So, today was just "one of those days"....
Sometimes being a mom is just crazy! Going to the dentist always makes a mom feel great. (NOT) My kids have major dental issues despite our nazi approach to brushing etc.. We banned fruit snacks last year after Ellie had EIGHT cavities, and the dentist told me that fruit snacks were the #1 culprit. The people at the dental office always tell you the bad results of the x-rays and then say, "how often do you brush?" UH.... NEVER?
So Katie has been saying her tooth hurt off and on for a month or so, but never anything big. Those of you who are veteran moms know that your kid can tell you their tooth(or any other body part) hurts and then you never hear about it again.. And without dental insurance, I usually wait to see if it develops into anything or if it will just pass with time. Well, last night it began "killing" her, so I took her into the dentist today.
When they asked me how long it had been bothering her I told them over a month and the 18 year old hygenist who obviously doesn't have children of her own said, "Are you kidding me? And you are just coming in now?!" Well, I of course had to just bite my tongue off not to say something extremely rude because of how annoyed I felt and just said, "Ya, its really expensive without insurance." She just rolled her eyes at me.
I am driving an unregistered 1985 Dodge Diplomat (ya, its a beauty) so that Matt can go to seminary at 6 a.m. without getting a ticket in the van, and as I went to the bank today and disputed some things with them, I know I may have looked like a bit of white trash to them... And as I unloaded my $250 worth of groceries from Wal-Mart into the enormous trunk, I got a few pleasant looks from the passers by.
Now, I am about to take Ellie to the doctor at 5:30 p.m. She had a fever last Wednesday night, a sore throat and a stiff neck. I called the doctor Thursday morning, but they couldn't get her in until Friday morning. Well of course Friday morning she felt better and perked up, so I cancelled her appointment. Then over the weekend she was a little sluggish but not that sick, had no fever or complaints. Well today (Monday) at 3 p.m. she starts screaming bloody murder out of nowhere. She tells me her head hurts so bad "it feels like there are no bones in it". So I call to get an appointment and the doctor's office lady says "how long has she been sick?" You think I would learn my lesson from the dental office, but no, I feel I must be honest in case it is of some great medical importance... I tell her since Wednesday, and she says "And you are just now calling?" UGHHH..........ahhhh.... the woes of a mother..

Oh boy, sometimes I like to say "the crap just hit the fan" (it's a quote from Airplane, slightly modified). Leah isn't old enough yet to have had very similar experiences but I can relate based on some of the ridiculous comments people make to me on the streets or the subway. It is definitely the worst when it's obvious that they have no experience with kids. I hope today was better!
Les, you can take a page out of my coping diary if you will.
Whenever plagued with a challenge, I remember the words of the venerable, Lucky Day, "In a way, all of us have an El Guapo to face someday. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us...El Guapo is a big dangerous guy who wants to kill us."
I am sorry that you've had to deal with those lovely people. They obviously don't have kids and/or have awesome insurance and don't have to think about the money. I hope that Ellie feels better.
