A few thoughts WEIGHING on me...

CAUTION: This is a slightly boring entry... mainly journaling for me, so you don't have to read the whole thing - it's a bit dry.

1. Why is it so easy to gain weight and so hard to lose it?
I got an email that got me thinking, why can a 2 lb box of chocolates make you gain 5 lbs? SO TRUE! I have been seriously bummed out lately with the whole weight issue... It seems to plague almost everyone I know, except a few BLESSED people, but everywhere I go with my fellow "women folk" the conversation inevitably turns to weight gain/loss etc... I was so happy last year to lose 30 pounds on weight watchers... it was the first time in my whole life that I had lost weight on a diet like that. Dave and I went whole heartedly into the program and lost the weight. Then Thanksgiving rolled around and we didn't want to deprive ourselves, so we indulgded for TURKEY day, and guess what? We never stopped!!! Needless to say we have gained back some of the weight. IT STINKS! Any thoughts, suggestions?
2. MOTHERHOOD...
Now, here's some ideas I have had lately... HOW DID MY MOM DO IT?
7 kids,Clean house, stayed sweet, delicious meals, stayed thin...
I struggle just to get my keister out of bed some days... and then being happy ALL day long? I am not sure if there has ever even been ONE day that I have been NICE all the way til bedtime... is it just me?
3. Camping...
Do you REALLY love it? I am getting ready for a camping trip this weekend... Is it really fun? Or do we just try desperately to make our children think its fun so that we can do a cheap trip? In preparing for camping, I tend to think, this is so much work, packing, packing and packing and then we get there, sleep in a tent, get eaten by bugs, have wild animals around us and pee in the bushes, is that FUN? I know, it's great to be in the mountains and appreciate nature, I do love that part, but could we sleep in a hotel afterwards? (ha ha)
4. DVDs or VHS?
So, I have to say -- I stumbled on a GREAT find this summer...
At Goodwill they have old VHS movies for .16 cents~ yes, .16 cents.
We have been regularly raiding the movie bin at Goodwill this summer... We can buy these for cheaper than we can rent them anywhere, if the movie stinks-- who cares? Throw it away or send it back to Goodwill...
I personally think DVDs are a rip off, they always get scratched and don't work anymore. So we have reverted to VHS movies and it has been great we got about 25 movies for $3 over the summer so far...
Here's the list of some of them:
Chariots of Fire
Father of the Bride
Singing in the Rain
Charade
An American President
Independence Day
The fugitive
Michael
Notting Hill
Alaska
several workout videos
Jumanji
Batman Returns
Kindergarten Cop
The Wedding Singer
To name a few, we have many others... IT's been fun!
5. Cancer scare -- I had a "little" cancer scare... and i do mean little. It wasn't a real big deal, but it did make me think. I had a lump removed last month and it was benign. I am grateful to Heavenly Father for hearing and answering our prayers. During that thime I thought a great deal about my life, my regrets, my future and mostly my children. I am so thankful to be a mother and be blessed with 4 wonderful children who I cannot imagine living without.
ALSO --Thanks to great friends who helped me out . Thanks so much for your meals, watching the kids, the phone calls and so on.. you are all so awesome and make living in VEGAS do-able! Really, when I think about the pros of living here, it is my friends that are on the top of the list.

Amen to all of the above - especially the motherhood comment. Camping can be fun if we could find a shaded, grassy, campsite with no bugs and a running shower. BTW - the campsite will be at on Sunday morning has no showers so hopefully we won't stink too bad when we show up at church. We will have fun!!

Leslie you are too hard on yourself! Jordan and I both greatly admire your relationship with each of your children. You get the most important things right, so kudos to you!

I've seriously had every single one of your thoughts, at least once a day! Sometimes I wonder why, if I love my kids so darn much, then why am I so mean to them by the time bedtime rolls around.
Weight is a never ending battle. I did however, find that I'm much happier when I'm not dieting, but replacing a very large portion of my families daily food intake with healthy fruits and veggies. The kids are nicer too, because they feel better too. And, the weight kinda just comes off when we do that. It's a slow process, but a healthier one. So when I'm at the grocery store, I TRY and always go with 'fresh' rather than 'processed'. It's been good for all of us.
I LOVE it when people like you (the ones that I think are near perfect), let me know how normal you really are, which lets me know how normal I really am! Thanks for that!!!

By the way...camping sucks for moms. Nothing fun about it. My thought though...take the kids camping (CHEAP) and save the money for Derrick and I to take a cruise! Good trade off. Have fun! kelli

I hear ya. Why is it so easy to justify why you SHOULD eat something and so hard to talk yourself into why you SHOULDN'T eat it, when we know what the consequences will be. I am tired of DVDs too. Most of ours are ruined- if only they had VHS players in vans. I've heard the BlueRay Dvds are much harder to scratch. And good for you for being aware of any possible signs of cancer. I'm so happy it was nothing, but I'm sure it was a bit of a reality check. Glad to hear things are ok!

This was hilarious! You are such a clever writer, Leslie! You are so right on and it's refreshing to hear someone call it as it is. I am so happy to hear that you feel the same way about being a mom. Even when I wake up with my sole objective being: to be a ray of sunshine to my kids ALL day, it hasn't happened yet. Glad I'm not the only one!! haha

And camping? Yep. I agree. It was SO nice being a kid. Now, I'm thinking a motorhome for camping sounds great! (not that it'll happen any time soon-but we can wish;)

Great ideas with the moveis at DI!!

I had no idea about your cancer scare. I am so glad it resolved quickly and you are all right!!

Have a great week!

So glad to hear your cancer scare had a happy ending. Sorry you had to go through that. And ditto to everything else you said. I don't mind going to the trouble of packing, unpacking, etc, to stay in the Hilton (or equivalent) but to go to all that trouble to sleep on dirt and smell like smoke is hardly my idea of fun!!
And just like you, I worked really hard and lost 1o lbs (over Thanksgiving/Christmas no less) but it's all come back since. I like food way too much! I admire people who have more self-control than me (that's pretty much everyone!)
I think you're amazing - a great example of a wonderful wife, mother, and friend. You're great!!!
